A Perfect Day – Part One

Interested in exploring the area around our new home I found it on the Internet.  I wrote down the date and directions and waited patiently for the day to come.  When it finally arrived, my husband and I set out for our adventure on that April afternoon.  We were on our way to the Goat Lady Dairy Open House!

The Goat Lady Dairy is a working family farm of 75 acres in Randolph County, North Carolina.  This was a great way to see farm life up close.  One of the owners was available to answer any questions and gave a great overview of the history of the farm.

The three breeds of dairy goats that occupy the farm are the Nubian (long-eared), the Saanen (all white), and the French Alpine (multi-colored).  We petted goats and goat kids.  Some of the goats grazed in a pretty flowered meadow.  My husband pulled tree branches down to where the goats could munch the leaves as they stood on their hind legs.

Around the farm we saw vegetable and flower gardens.  Chickens ran around the yard.  Baby chicks rested comfortably in the chicken house under a heat lamp.  A nice pond sat next to the building that hosted the free sampling of all kinds of goat cheeses.  I discovered that I love goat cheese!  The cheeses I sampled had wonderful flavors and creamy textures.  We purchased 2 different kinds to take home and later that day our children decided they liked goat cheese too.

The whole farm was so charming.  The staff was friendly.  I enjoyed the company of my husband and the slow, relaxed pace of the day.   The weather was great.

You know – those days when everything happens perfectly?  When all the events of the day flow like a masterfully arranged symphony and there is nothing you could have added to it to make it more memorable?  This was one of those days.

Another Open Farm Day is scheduled for October 2011 (day TBA) from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.  See you there, my friends. http://www.goatladydairy.com/The_Farm.htm
